01
Cover each driver individually
One driver’s policy does not cover everybody travelling in the car. The owner can ask about adding drivers or each eligible borrower can consider suitable temporary cover. Confirm dates, times and territorial limits for the whole route.
02
Motorway services are still public places
Changing drivers in a service area does not create an insurance exception. The new driver needs valid cover before moving the car, even within the car park.
03
Make the handover calm
Stop somewhere safe. Let the new driver adjust the seat, mirrors and steering wheel and learn the controls. Explain any driver-assistance features that behave differently from their usual car.
04
If the journey includes work or Europe
Describe the journey honestly. Commuting, business appointments and carrying goods can affect the class of use. European travel needs specific checking rather than an assumption that every UK policy automatically provides the same cover abroad.
