01
Documents to check
- The borrower’s driving licence is valid for the vehicle.
- The insurance certificate names the right driver and registration.
- The cover dates and times include the complete loan.
- The permitted use includes the planned journey.
- Your MOT and vehicle tax are in order where required.
02
Show them the car
Point out existing damage, tyre-pressure warnings, security devices and anything unusual about starting or locking it. Show where the fuel cap, spare wheel or repair kit and locking wheel-nut key are kept.
03
Agree the awkward bits
Talk about the excess, fuel, fines, congestion charges, tolls, cleaning and recovery. Decide who can drive. If the borrower plans to let another person take over, that person needs your permission and their own valid cover.
04
Know when to say no
Do not lend a car you believe is unsafe, or to somebody who appears unfit to drive. If the insurance evidence is vague or the intended use conflicts with the policy, wait until the position is clear.
