01
Get clear permission
The owner must agree to the loan. If the car is leased, financed, hired or supplied by an employer, the person with the keys may not have authority to lend it. Ask if there is any doubt.
02
Arrange cover in your own name
You might be added to your friend’s policy or buy eligible temporary cover for the car. Your own DOC extension may be another possibility, although it is often restricted and may provide only third-party cover. Confirm the position from current documents.
03
Take a two-minute walk around
Look at the tyres and warning lights. Note the fuel level, existing dents and the location of the spare wheel or repair kit. Adjust the seat and mirrors before moving, and find the lights, wipers, demister and handbrake while stationary.
04
If something goes wrong
Know who to call for breakdown help and what excess applies after an accident. Report any collision to the relevant insurer promptly, even if the damage looks minor. Do not promise privately to settle another driver’s costs before speaking to the insurer.
